2022 WAF Summer Undergraduate Internship Programme

Submitted by admin on 9 August 2022

On the 13th of June 2022, Birukti Tsige and Susan Takang, the 2nd cohort of student interns assumed their positions at Wellness Africa Foundation (WAF). Our interns will spend the rest of the summer working closely with our WAF team. Birukti Tsige (Harvard ‘23), who was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but later emigrated to Massachusetts at the age of eight is our 2022 Public Health Intern and she will help create and administer public health outreaches. Susan Takang (Harvard ‘24) is our Partnerships and Communications Intern and she will primarily help connect WAF with more organizations along with expanding the WAF social media presence.

The undergraduate summer internship program began in 2021 and is an amazing opportunity to give students experience in handling real-world healthcare problems in Africa. Both interns have been working closely with Wellness Africa Foundation Founder and Executive Director, Mr. Akintunde Akinmolayan since early June. WAF's plans for the internship are to develop the talents of the interns and give them the opportunity to expand upon what they have learned and apply those learned skills to their internship positions.

Among others, the Public Health Intern is mainly tasked with co-organising a rural health outreach (blood pressure and blood glucose checks, along with the administration of medical consultations and medications) at Ayerose Community scheduled for Saturday, 13th August; reviewing WAF’s Journey From Inception, a project detailing WAF’s creation and history; as well as planning and researching for a presentation regarding "Reducing Preventable Maternal and Under-5 Mortality in Nigeria" scheduled for Tuesday, August 16. Following the presentation, there will be a panel discussion by health professionals and women leaders. The presentation is in partnership with the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, and in collaboration with National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN). The presentation will be streamed live for the global audience. If you are interested in attending the event, click here to register!

The Partnerships and Communications Intern, Susan Takang, who is originally from Massachusetts, USA, is in charge of the creation of the WAF Newsletter. The Newsletter has been developed from scratch and will be published periodically with the most up-to-date content. Susan is responsible for designing graphics and creating content for the Wellness Africa Foundation socials including Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
